Billy Strings was born on October 3rd, 1992, in the city of Lansing, Michigan United States. He grew up in Morehead, Kentucky before his family moved to Muir, Michigan. Billy grew up with his stepfather “Terry Barber” who was a picker in the Michigan Bluegrass.

Barber was a heavy effect on his stepson Billy and trained him in traditional bluegrass at a very little age. Billy’s stepfather oriented him to the music of Doc Watson, Del McCoury, and David Grisman.

There are some other musicians available that his stepfather oriented him and that were Bill Monroe, John Hartford, Larry Sparks, Earl Scruggs, and Ralph Stanley. He is also a fan of rock and metal, exploited by Jimi Hendrix, Widespread Panic, Def Leppard Me, and Johnny Winter.

When he completed his high school education and he started looking at his career and want to become a famous musician.

The first time in 2012 he started his career in Mandolin when Don Julin a mandolin player from Traverse City Michigan and the second member of that new group Mandolin from Dummies asked billy to join their group on a paying gig.

Then he accepts the request and joins them that collaboration lasted for about 4 years long and then billy leaves that group.

Billy also starts writing different songs when he was the age of 16 he started writing his first song but after some problems, he can’t complete the song. Then after some time when he was at the age of 19 wrote a new song “Dust in a Baggie“.

That song is actually of his close friend who was living in the same town where billy live. When he started writing songs then he got inspiration from different friends’ life those living on the same street where billy live.

In 2019 he played around 180 gigs in one year and a total of 200. He also grew up with gigs and his popularity worldwide by creating different music series.

But as we talk about February 12, 2018, when Rolling Stone published an article entitled “Bluegrass Prodigy Billy Strings Plots 2018 Spring Tour” that was an amazing time for billy to introduce that gig. Now he is one of the latest breakneck guitar piers to emerge in the bluegrass world.

The International Bluegrass Music Association awarded him with the 2016 Momentum Awards for instrumentalist of the year.
